Năm Quý Mão (43), Hai Bà Trưng chống cự lại với quân nhà Hán ở Cấm Khê, thất thế, đều tử trận. Theo truyền thuyết Việt Nam, hai bà đã nhảy xuống sông Hát (Hát Môn, Hà Tây cũ) tự trẫm để bảo toàn khí tiết. Còn theo Hậu Hán thư, sách sử của Trung Quốc, hai bà đã bị quân Mã Viện bắt được và chặt đầu đem về Lạc Dương.
