Bánh gai hiện nay rất dễ mua tại Việt Nam và được chế biến và bán tại nhiều nơi, nhưng nguồn gốc của loại bánh này ban đầu là từ các tỉnh Nam Định, Hải Dương, Thanh Hóa, Tuyên Quang trong Bắc Bộ Việt Nam.
